Apple has just released the final version of macOS Big Sur to the public. You can start upgrading your compatible Mac devices by downloading Big Sur from the App Store or Settings > Software Updates. But if you prefer to completely wipe out your Mac and do a fresh install of macOS Big Sur, you will need a bootable media.

I perform a fresh install every time Apple releases a major macOS version – which usually happens once a year. This time too, I will update my Macbook Air by performing a fresh install. And to do that, I will make a bootable SD card. You can also use a USB stick aka pen drive aka flash drive and perform a fresh install.

In this quick tutorial, I will share how I make a bootable macOS memory card or USB stick, wipe my Mac, and perform a fresh install. You will need a stable internet connection and a storage media with minimum 16GB space. Before you begin, make sure you have taken backup of your Mac.

Step 1: Download macOS Big Sur

Open App Store and search for macOS Big Sur. Click Get and the Software Update window will open. Click upgrade now and it will start downloading the macOS update. If you don’t see macOS Big Sur in App Store, follow this link and choose open link in App Store.

Create a Windows 10 bootable USB stick. Download a Windows 10 ISO file to your computer. The first two options on the list require simply following instructions in the tool, and you won't need to deal with an ISO file at all.

• Much like prior versions of Mac OS, you can easily create a bootable install drive for MacOS Mojave 10.14. These boot install drives allow for things like easily formatting a Mac to perform a clean install of macOS Mojave, installing macOS Mojave onto multiple Macs without them each having to download the installer, or even as a troubleshooting tool since it can be booted from by any.
• Create Linux Mint Bootable USB on Mac: Terminal App. You can create a bootable USB for Linux Mint from a Mac environment. However, you can not do it on your own as you need a little help from some third-party software out there. If you do some googling, you should find tons of them, but many of them might not work for you.
• How to Boot Mac from USB Media. After creating a bootable USB drive, the user simply needs to plug the created drive into the open port on the Mac. Here are the steps to boot Mac from the USB flash drive: Power on the system. Press and hold the Option (Alt) key on the keyboard when the computer starts.
• If you’d like to keep files synced between a desktop and laptop, expand your storage, or have a bootable backup copy of your system, there’s a hidden feature in Disk Utility that makes it easy. Generally, booting from an external drive will be slower, even with new Thunderbolt and USB-C drives.

The installer is 12GB so be patience.

Once it finished downloading, the macOS installer is placed under Applications and will run automatically. Close the setup window.

Step 2: Preparing the Storage Media

Insert the storage media you would like to use. I use a 64GB micro SD card with my MacBook Air. You can use a USB-C to USB adapter for Mac models without USB A ports and memory card slot.

Open Disk Utility.

Select the storage medium you just connected from the list on left and click Erase. Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from Format dropdown. Type BigSur or any other name you like. Make it simple because you will use this name in the next step.

Click Erase and wait until the media is erased.

Step 3: Making the Bootable Media

Now open Terminal and type the following command. Make sure you don’t leave any spaces. Replace BigSur with whatever name you chose in Step 2.

Press enter.

Enter your password, type Y and press enter again. The process takes roughly 20 minutes. After it’s finished, you will notice that the name of your USB stick/SD card has been changed to Install macOS Big Sur.

Step 4: Installing macOS Big Sur from Bootable Media

Right. Now you have a Big Sur bootable media. It’s time to start the installation process.

Restart your Mac. When it’s booting up (right after the chime sound), press and hold Option key until you see a screen with an option to select the startup disk.

Select Install macOS Big Sur and click continue. Let the installer load.

Now you will see the macOS Recovery screen which will ask you to select a user account which you know the password of. Choose your administrator account and enter password. Note that this is the user on your current macOS setup.

Click Disk Utility and continue. Select the volume where macOS is currently installed on your Mac. Click Erase. Leave all options as default. Click Erase again.

After the process finishes, close Disk Utility and you will return to the recovery screen. Choose ‘Install macOS’ this time and click continue.

The macOS installation process will start and your Mac will reboot a few times.

Once finished, you should see the macOS setup screen. After you are done with onboarding, you will see the desktop and are all set to start using macOS Big Sur.

The same bootable media you just made can be used to install macOS Big Sur on all your (compatible) Macs. This approach helps save bandwidth if you have more than one devices while also letting you erase all data and perform a clean install. It will also come in handy as a recovery media if your Mac software misbehaves in future.

Method 1: Format Bootable USB in Windows 10

This is the most common step taken by every user to restore their USB drive back to the normal state. Let’s see how it works…

1. Click on Start and Search for “This PC” & Press Enter.

2. Now select the bootable USB Flash Drive. Right Click on it and Select Format…

3. Now select the File system as NTFS or FAT32 and Allocation unit size (as per your need). Also, you can also click on Restore device defaults.

Finally Click on Start, then OK and Close.

And your USB disk is formatted now.

You can also perform this same using Disk Management.

Unboot USB Using Disk Management System

Just follow these steps…

1. Click on Start and Search for “diskmgmt.msc” & Press Enter.

2. Now locate your bootable USB drive. Right Click on it and Select option Format…

3. Select the Filesystem and allocation unit size as Default. And Click OK.

This method is a quick fix but does not work always in making USB drive Unbootable. And that’s why we use Diskpart cmd.

Method 2: Convert Bootable USB to Normal using Diskpart CMD

I hope you have already inserted your bootable USB drive in your PC before performing these steps…

1. Click on Start and Search for “CMD” & Press Enter. And the Command Prompt dialog box will open up.

2. Now type “diskpart” command & Press Enter. And it will open up DISKPART

3. Now type “disk list” & Press Enter. It will list all your hard drives present on your Computer.

4. Now type “select disk 1” & Press Enter. Here you have to select the right bootable USB device, like in my case disk 1 of 16gb is for USB.

Note:- Please be careful while selecting the disk as you may end up losing your data by selecting the wrong hard disk.

Now the major steps to convert the bootable USB to normal one.

5. Now type the “clean” command & Press Enter. And it will wipe/clean all your Bios boot files present on USB.

6. Next type “create partition primary” & Press Enter. I will help you to create a partition on your drive.

Now the imp. command to format bootable USB to make it normal.

7. Now type “format fs=fat32 quick” & Press Enter. You can also use the “format fs=ntfs quick” command but fat32 is standard for USBs.

8. And Done! You have successfully converted your bootable USB to a normal pen drive. Now type “exit” command & close cmd.

Now the next method…

Method 3: Restore USB drive to Original State Using Third-Party Tools

If you don’t like command-line methods like the above one, then you can also use other third parties tools like:

1. EaseUS Partition Manager
2. Minitool Partition Wizard
3. AOMEI Partition Assistant

And EaseUS Partition Manager works great to convert bootable USB to normal pendrive. Just you have to follow some steps…

1. Insert the USB drive, Open partition wizard.

2. Now Select the USB, Right Click on it and select Format.

3. Now Select the File system and Done!

By using Disk Utility program, you can easily format or restore your USB drive to the original state in MacOS.

Just you have to follow some steps…

Another way to open it, is that click on Launchpad, then Other and then Disk Utility.

2. Now select the USB Flash Drive from the left-hand sidebar and then Click on Erase. Now select the Format as MS-DOS (FAT) & Click on Erase.
